Overview: In the past, high-tech companies faced the question of whether to develop a Professional Services (PS) capability. But nowadays, industry and market dynamics have made professional services an indispensable part of most high-tech companies' offerings. The question is no longer whether to develop that capability, but how to develop it in a way that contributes to the company's pursuit of high performance. Yet high-tech companies' forays into PS have been mixed. Some companies have found PS to be a major competitive differentiator and genuine boost to the bottom line. In many others, however, PS has failed to live up to expectations and, in some companies, actually has diminished shareholder value.
