Overview: As competition in the wireless marketplace intensifies, and as saturation occurs among the customer base leading to slower Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) growth, wireless operators on the path to high performance are looking to cost optimization strategies- and especially looking for ways to decrease their existing transmission network costs. For most carriers, these costs are sub-stantial. One recent study of European and North American wireless carriers found that the network accounts for an average of 30 to 40 percent of an operator's total operating expenses. Of that spending, transmission accounts for 34 percent of costs; technical personnel costs make up another 29 percent.
