Overview: The purpose of this paper is to introduce a real-life legal case and provide details about the facts, the questions raised, the arguments used, and the final decisions of the authorized body. The paper presents the case of Japan - Taxes on Alcoholic Beverages that was reviewed and decided by the World Trade Organization (WTO's) Dispute Settlement Body. The parties involved were the European Communities, the United States, Canada, and Japan. First, the case was decided by a Panel, and after the parties to the suit appealed, an Appellate Body issued its final rulings and recommendations. The essay goes on to critically discuss the legal text by taking into consideration certain socioeconomic factors.
