Overview: The automotive industry is no stranger to offshoring. Offshoring practices, which began with the global sourcing of parts and components more than a decade ago, have expanded to include IT offshoring and are increasingly encompassing more and more of the value chain. Still, the offshoring of business processes and engineering services is a relatively nascent phenomenon in the automotive industry, lagging behind other sectors such as financial services, travel, high-tech, and pharmaceuticals. Our experience in the auto industry indicates this reluctance to offshore higher-end functions is due to persistent misconceptions about the benefits and risks. Our goal is to debunk the myths and expose the current realities of offshoring automotive business processes and engineering services.
