Overview: In contemporary business era, the mantra of pay-for-performance is used to boost the performance level of the employees in an organization. By linking a significant portion of the employees’ salary with their performance, the management is able to increase the motivation of the employees and encourage them to bring out their ‘best’ at the workplace. The paper, however, argues that some managers exercise influence over their own pay and manage to receive pay without performance, weakening the very basis of the aforesaid mantra. The issue is examined in detail.
