Overview: Mortgage-Backed Securities (MBS) are fixed-income securities backed by pools of mortgage loans. Their potential for higher yields reflects unique characteristics of mortgage-backed securities and may make them an attractive investment for many fixed-income investors seeking higher income and portfolio diversification. A large percentage of mortgage-backed securities are backed by pools of residential mortgages insured by government sponsored entities. When homeowners make monthly mortgage payments, which include both interest and principal, the payments are passed through to MBS holders.
