Overview: Renewable energy investments could play an important (and multidimensional) role within a long-term investor's broader investment strategy. Generally, they will be viewed as an absolute return investment, and due to their high specific risks, they will probably have a relatively small allocation within a diversified portfolio. Given the secular trends in place, the idiosyncratic nature of investments and the type of funds available, we expect a low correlation with other assets. Hence, these funds may offer diversification benefits by lowering the overall risk within investment portfolios. For beneficiaries that prize responsible investment, renewable energy is also likely to be appealing.
