Overview: An organization is a social entity composed of two or more persons who work together towards the attainment of common goals. For the organization to work as a cohesive unit, it is essential that a formal structure of reporting and control be established among the different members of the organization. This gives a definite direction to the corporate strategy of the organization and facilitates the strategic management process. This formal structure is known as Organizational Structure (OS). For OS to be in place, certain characteristics have to be evolved. They include division of labor, hierarchy of authority, and span of control. The paper examines these issues and discusses different types of OS.
