Overview: There is a tendency to equate agriculture with farming, and to associate the agricultural market with the steadily shrinking number of farms in the U.S. Today, two major trends are driving the growth of agribusiness. First, there is the relentless consolidation of farms and second, is the integration of cultivation and processing in “vertically integrated” organizations. Until now, however, insurers had no standard forms other than farm-owners and commercial property forms for insuring commercial agricultural property. Agribusiness exposures are often complex combinations of farm and commercial exposures, and risk managers and brokers are heavily involved in structuring coverage for an account.
