Overview: Tax-exempt unit investment trusts represent one of the simplest ways for Americans to invest in tax-exempt municipal bonds. They offer a wide range benefits, including: Attractive current income free from federal and, in some cases, state and local taxes; High degree of safety with regard to payment of interest and repayment of principal; Professional selection of individual securities; Diversification and professional supervision; Convenience. A tax-exempt unit trust is a specialized investment company that assembles a fixed portfolio of state and local government bonds, commonly called municipal bonds, and then sells fractional, undivided interests in that portfolio to the public. In return, investors receive interest income on a regular basis, paid monthly, quarterly or semiannually, depending on the trust.
