Overview: With the Big Three and the French, German, and Italian automakers behind it, ISO/TS 16949 stands to become the automotive quality management system of the future. Each company considering registration to ISO/TS 16949 should obtain the document (available from the Automotive Industry Action Group at (248) 358-3003) as quickly as possible, because a close reading of ISO/TS 16949 will be necessary to determine the extent of needed revisions. The article propounds the element-by-element summary that explains the direction and extent of the changes. The sheer umber and broad implications of these additions clearly indicate that a great deal of effort will be required to migrate from a QS-9000-based QMS to one that can be registered to ISO/TS 16949.
