Overview: This paper examines the attractiveness of REITs as investments for a broad range of investors. In this context, it examine their historical and expected risk/reward characteristics and their role in diversified portfolios REITs have grown from a peripheral segment of the real estate market to showing signs of becoming quite. REITs are proving to be of increasing interest as a real estate investment for those who prefer the increased liquidity versus direct investment, and are willing to take on an element of stock market volatility, and those with reasonably small sums of money to invest. Further, income-oriented investors have been attracted by the historically high yields versus core U.S. fixed income and equity.
