Overview: This paper provides a cursory description and overview of the value of investing in timber and agriculture, the value and risks of investing in oil and gas, and a more detailed description and analysis of the value of investing in the power sector. This paper is meant to be provocative from the standpoint of the potential missed opportunities arising from the inaccurate or too-multifaceted labeling of potentially valuable investments. From the hard asset manager’s perspective, the seeming randomness or arbitrariness of the asset-class labeling and the confusion regarding allocation for these types of investments may produce adverse selection at a time when diversity away from the “traditional” private equity vehicles might provide more balanced and better performing portfolios.
