For 22,000-employee Owens Corning, Toledo, Ohio, the e-procurement journey began in 1998 when the company hired a new vice president of global procurement. This has led to a number of advancements. Owens Corning launched its first generation of e-auctions in early 1999, using a full-service provider. While these initial auctions were successful, the company opted to switch to BayBuilder, which provides a self-service reverse auction solution, in mid-2000. While buyers are still working to gain a comfort level with the new way of doing business, most suppliers love the concept of reverse auctions adopted by the company. A recommendation was offered for procurement professionals considering e-procurement. To know the case, refer to the article.
