Overview: This paper provides a survey of the applications and theory of dynamic pricing mechanisms with inventory considerations. Based on the discussions with DPOSPs and the dynamic pricing literature from the fields of operations research, economics and marketing, it suggests a categorization of market environments for which distinct dynamic pricing problems arise. It discusses the price optimization solutions currently offered by DPOSPs, the challenges they face in their implementation, provide an overview of the existing relevant literature, and propose future directions for research. Paper also concludes by discussing how advances in e-commerce and information technology impact the implementation of dynamic pricing policies in practice.
