During its 102-year history, Boyd Coffee Co. of Portland, Ore., has survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, and even the onslaught of Starbucks. But back in 1997, David and Dick Boyd, the brothers who own and manage the family business, were just a screaming match away from trashing the company.
