Overview: In recent years, the growing use of the Internet has spawned numerous issues. At the forefront is the subject of privacy. One of the biggest controversies involves the practice of "on-line profiling" of Internet users, where personal information is collected based upon the users' Internet activity. Outlined in this article are recent legal reactions to such conduct. These include a discussion of recent private litigation, which has become more prevalent, particularly in the context of class action lawsuits; FTC enforcement proceedings; state enforcement activities; and legislative efforts aimed at protecting individuals' privacy interests. Internet privacy, without doubt, presents significant issues for consumers, industry and the government. It is also without doubt that these issues have increasingly become the subject of private and governmental attention in the form of lawsuits and proposed legislation.
