Overview: Fire protection is an important element in any facility, regardless of occupancy type. It is comprised of three basic parts: detection, suppression, and containment. Detection and suppression are more active in nature, while containment is passive. Firestopping must be properly installed; otherwise the barrier may not work as designed. Firestopping is an integral part of all passive fire protection plans. It is designed and installed to prevent the transmission of smoke, flames, heat, and even water through a smoke or fire barrier. Many firestopping products are intumescent, which means they will expand when heated. As they expand, they form a charred material that fills voids and acts as an insulating barrier to smoke and heat. Where the annular space exceeds manufacturers limits, the barrier should be reconstructed, using original building materials, as close to the penetration as possible. Firestopping is an important part of the overall fire protection plan for your facility. Plant maintenance employees should also be trained to know where fire and smoke barriers are located, and what to look for. Fortunately, firestopping is relatively easy and inexpensive.
