Overview: Facilities managers are increasingly finding that their organization has defined policies covering environmental and social issues. This is clearly both a challenge and an opportunity. If responsibilities and clear requirements on some sustainability issues can be passed effectively to contractors this can make a significant contribution to meeting the organization’s objectives. If not, those objectives will probably be harder to meet. Progress in some areas may depend greatly on the activities of contractors. FaberMaunsell recently completed the Managing Buidlings Sustainably (MBS) project. The guidance and resources produced as part of the project can help FMs to understand the sustainability agenda and encourage implementation of good practice in buildings. The MBS approach provides a step-by-step approach to tackling sustainability issues by targeting documentation at six key stages of the contracting process. MBS was written with offices in mind, but the approach can be applied to all building types. It will produce model procurement plans and engagement plans to help building owners and occupiers to work together to tackle sustainability issues. As part of this new project we will also be making the existing MBS information available online in a more accessible format.
