Overview: Often overlooked or downplayed when designing a new building or refurbishing an existing structure, restrooms play a significant role in shaping building occupants’ opinions of a facility. Fortunately, realizing the importance of these spaces and the potential for creating durable, decorative designs, building owners and facility executives are paying more attention to restrooms. Before embarking on a restroom design project, however, building owners and facility executives must be aware of pitfalls that can hamstring their efforts. The space should be arranged so that some type of wall area blocks a view into the lavatory areas or distinctly separates the two functions, yet still maintains easy accessibility so that occupants don’t have to proceed through a maze of screen walls.
