Overview: Product life cycles are growing shorter, customer expectations are growing higher, and technological innovation pushes the rate of change to higher and higher levels. The competitive bar for companies rises constantly, which means that the performance bar for executives rises with it. Just as companies that thrive will be those that learn from the feedback of the marketplace, so executives who thrive will be those adept at using feedback to enhance their leadership effectiveness. Performance improvement is most likely to come from the areas of unintended effects and from engaging in behaviors that are less comfortable. Trying new approaches often runs counter to the investment of ego in the old approach. Most people are relatively unskilled in giving feedback and are more likely to deliver criticism, further increasing the likelihood of defensiveness and resistance.
