Overview: Communication to staff is a key factor in the successful implementation of any job evaluation and salary administration program. The primary goal of the communication session is to get the staff to "buy in" to both the process and the end results. This requires openness, honesty, and the provision of sufficient information for staff to understand what is about to happen and how it will/may affect them. By taking employees through the process in a step-by-step manner they will begin to understand what the process involves. By answering their questions as candidly as possible, you will establish an environment of openness and honesty. According to experts, job evaluation and salary administration programs must be as fair and objective as one can make them. But it is a given that not everyone will be pleased with the results. Communication is not a panacea - but it can go a long way to reassuring the majority of the staff about the equity of the program. This article has focused on the initial communication to staff. Needless to say, open, honest, ongoing dialogue with your staff will be an important element in maintaining the program over time.
