Overview: The explosive growth of Internet-based open networks paves the way for instantaneous and devastating trans-national electronic crimes that can deny victims the ability to operate their businesses or control their assets. These exploitations will multiply as technologies change, as new technologies are introduced, and as intruders’ methods inevitably become more sophisticated. Indeed, cyber crime will remain a fact of life for organisations everywhere. As a result, organisational leaders must take specific steps to defend their assets against electronic crimes with a comprehensive program of training and cyber defence preparedness (see Figure 4 below). They must also establish a plan for how they will respond should an intrusion take place. (Such a plan offers a wide array of benefits, not the least of which is that it can help enable a successful recovery as well as an effective prosecution of the offenders.) Properly implemented, an integrated program for mitigating the risks of cyber misbehaviour can also become a strategic advantage in a world increasingly dependent on the security and reliability of communications networks.
