Overview: Any organization, no matter how big or how complex, has its roots in the entrepreneurial spirit that spawned it. The challenge facing organizations today is to enhance the effectiveness of their people through a leadership style that is both pragmatic and inspiring, one that exercises control not solely through authority but through work design, standards, measurement and feedback. This leadership style demands respect for the human determinants of productivity and process effectiveness as well as a belief in the value of technology and methods of production. It focuses on enabling people rather than empowering them, on inspiring them rather than motivating them. To create a culture that value people involves a longer process than the short-term, traditional forms of motivating employees. Yet the pay-off is that the business that operates within such a culture will have a life cycle that is much healthier, more vital, more self-sustaining and longer-lasting than may be evident from its annual financial statement.
