Overview: Classic business insurance that protects tangible assets cannot apply in the cyber realm. Several major insurers and brokerages agree that a whole new line of insurance is needed to cover the world of "e-commerce. To the architects of these policies, standard commercial property and inland marine forms created to address physical damage to buildings and tangible personal property are not suitable for insuring damage, destruction, or theft of intangible information. If anything is likely to allow standard commercial property insurers to cover their insureds’ electronic property exposures, it is the inclusion of strict warranties regarding procedures for protecting data from attack and replacing damaged data quickly.
