Overview: No one will dispute the importance of effective sales talent to help drive revenue success. Sales resources get customers, grow revenue, keep customers, launch products, sustain products and drive the top line. However, talented salespeople are difficult to find, recruit and retain. There are three major drivers in recruiting employees to fill sales positions. The first driver is money – the pay package and perceived upside potential. The second factor is great products – a company’s leading products can give it a competitive position in the labor market. Finally, a company’s overall reputation for career growth will help attract and retain the right sales talent. Any shortfall in one of these categories requires investment to overcome recruitment constraints. Paying more money to retain people may not be the only answer. By creating a human ecosystem from trainees through twilighters, a company will have an edge in combating the recruitment and retention issues that occur with surges in the economy.
