Overview: The article discusses the fact that employee investigations have soared since Sept. 11, leading to the firing of hundreds, if not thousands, of workers with blemishes in their pasts. Screening is up sharply at other kinds of workplaces, such as pharmaceutical and service companies. Congressionally mandated background checks are being considered for a number of industries with special security concerns. Background checks are perfectly legal, but unions and workers' attorneys are challenging what they say are unlawful abuses in how companies are using information they receive - especially when the records come from the FBI. Another controversy is erupting over whether employees with criminal records should have a chance to demonstrate they are not security risks before being dismissed. This may be harder to do, if not impossible.
