Overview: When complex projects result in large cost overruns, managers want to understand why this happened. There may be the possibility of making a claim against another party, or managers may simply wish to learn from any mistakes made. When using System Dynamics (SD) models to analyze the reasons for project overruns as a part of a litigationor organizational learning process, there is a strong focus on explaining historical aspects precisely. This paper discusses the nature of discontinuities in SD modeling through examples where the replication of discontinuities was required when modeling project overruns. It is argued, that when exploring the reasons for the failure of a complex projectas a part of litigation and/or organizational learning, the modeling of discontinuous events, particular endogenously driven events, needs to be an integral part of the modeling process.
