Overview: OPG Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is an Ontario based company, whose principal business is the generation and sale of electricity to customers in Ontario and to interconnected markets. Their focus is on the risk-managed production and sale of reliable electricity from their competitive generation assets. The Ontario markets were de-regulated creating, in the process, a dramatically different business environment for participants and changing the risk profile associated with operating there. After a review of the tools available, OPG turned to KWI for its kW3000 software solution. As a result, kW3000 allows OPG to manage its volumetric risks by modeling the forward risk profiles of its generation assets, which in turn allows OPG to make better pricing and contract term decisions. OPG uses the KWI Profit-at-Risk™ (PaR) measure to assess volumetric risks associated with the generation assets, contracts, fuel purchase and long-term retail load.
