Overview: Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a way of making the 'voice of the customer' heard throughout an organization. It is a systematic process for capturing customer requirements and translating these into requirements that must be met throughout the 'supply chain'. QFD is particularly valuable when design trade-offs are necessary to achieve the best overall solution. The main 'bottom line' benefits of using QFD include greater likelihood of product success in the marketplace due to the precise targeting of key customer requirements, reduced overall cost due to reducing design changes, reduced product cost by eliminating redundant features and over-design. The article also shows a QFD chart to make the concept much clearer. Hence QFD is used to establish product and component characteristics which need to be controlled in order for the outputs to meet customer requirements.
