Overview: There is a big difference between doing business on the Internet and having business applications and processes fully integrated to take maximum advantage of the value-creating opportunities that exist. It is believed e-business gateways will deliver significant value in two key areas: by preparing business processes for the Internet and offering flexibility in outsourcing applications without investing heavily in integration; and by connecting employees, customers, partners and e-markets. For multinational corporations, e-business gateways represent a significant step toward the extended enterprise. Businesses are recognizing that their enterprises must be “Net-ready” before they can take advantage of e-marketplaces. The e-business gateway is likely to be adopted first by businesses looking for solutions that accelerate their supply chains or that enhance customer relationship management (CRM). This paper presents the predictions about the evolution of the extended enterprise and discusses how senior executives can make the most of this emerging opportunity.
