Overview: The report details a two-phased research project in which American firms’ attitudes toward ISO 14000 were analyzed, the firms’ approach to ISO 14000 and environmental management systems were reviewed, and the implications of these facets of environmentally conscious manufacturing were summarized. Some highlights of this research are included: Environmental management systems are essentially multi-dimensional and complex entities. The ISO 14000 certification program is relatively new. Successful attainment of ISO 14000 has a large, positive impact on the perceived efficiency and effectiveness of the environmental management system. Compared with other voluntary-based programs aimed at improving environmental performance, the evidence indicates that the ISO 14000 certification process is more effective and efficient when viewed in terms of its impact on performance.
