Overview: The purpose of this article is to clear away some of the confusion about what ISO 9000 is and whether or not it is worth the time and effort, by providing a listing of the generally agreed-upon benefits of ISO registration as well as a summary of the general requirements for registration. ISO 9000 is a set of generic standards for quality management and quality assurance that describe "what" must be be accomplished, but not how. The "how" is left up to you. The theory seems to be that companies that can show proof of compliance with the standards can be trusted by other companies to deliver an acceptable minimum level of quality and service. Such trust, of course, can greatly enhance the abilities of compliant companies to do business internationally.
