Overview: This article is basically a Case-Study about Detroit Medical Center (DMC) who implemented ISO1 4001 after countering with various problems. DMC is one of the largest medical care provider in southeastern Michigan, operating seven hospitals, two nursing centers and more than 100 outpatient clinics. Like other large medical care providers, DMC consumes enormous amounts of natural resources, materials, goods, and services. DMC’s goals were to reduce consumption, improve on bottom-line costs, ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, and demonstrate to surrounding communities in which it works that it is an environmentally responsible neighbor. The solution which solved its problem was ISO14001. After reviewing a number of options, the DMC decided to pursue registration to ISO 14001. Using the EMS embodied in ISO 14001, organizations identify all the aspects of their operations that have or can have an impact on the environment and then implement a uniform improvement program in each location. The result was that project was launched in March with overview training of all key management staff. The basic policies and procedures necessary to implement ISO 14001 were developed and/or integrated into the DMC’s preexisting Joint Commission .
