Overview: Six Sigma is partly a great breakthrough and partly a fad. The missionary zeal, the specialized terminology (e.g. "Black Belts"), the rush by some consultants to make profits at the expense of sound methodology, and the "instant pudding" attitudes of some upper managers are all examples of the faddish elements of Six Sigma. However, there is much more to Six Sigma than the fad. It is the latest step in the evolution of quality and productivity improvement programs. The difference in impact of Six Sigma improvement and control methodology is the degree of discipline in the sequencing and use of the tools, upper management active involvement, linkage to strategy, and measurement of results tied to the bottom line. It will be around as long as successful programs yield measurable results. When programs stop yielding results, Six Sigma will disappear.
