Overview: As public companies continue to enrich their executives and employees through stock options, private companies have found several ways to keep up by offering their own equity-based or equity-like incentive compensation plans. When it comes to offering executives and employees a real equity stake in a privately held company, owners often become concerned they will end up diluting their ownership stake and impeding their ability to run the company as they see fit.
