Overview: Many problems are directly related to the availability of alcohol at company events. For example, employees may drink too much and cause harm to other people, property, or themselves if they decide to drive while intoxicated. Additionally, employees who are intoxicated and not thinking clearly may sexually harass a co-worker, subordinate, or another guest during the holiday event. While it is generally permissible to terminate an employee for violating a rule prohibiting the use of intoxicants while at work, an employer must be careful in regulating off-duty conduct, including when an employee is attending a company-sponsored event.
