Overview: Child labor laws, part of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), seek to shield minors under the age of 18 from working at dangerous occupations, for an excessive number of hours, and at unsuitable times of day or night. Employers are subject to federal child labor laws if they are engaged in interstate commerce—and most employers are so engaged because the definition is quite broad.
