Overview: The development of film cannot be traced back to an exact time in history. What we know as cinema nowadays is a result of many different devices or scientific inventions eventually coming together and producing moving pictures. The earliest known form of these inventions was the Thaumatrope. This invention was based of Sir John Herschel's spinning-coin principle. It consisted of a cardboard disc which merged the pictures on each face into a single image when spun on a piece of thread.
