Overview: The lesson the author learned this year was not to think short term when hiring new people. When interviewing people for an open position, it's important not only to get the best person for the job, but also to know where that person truly wants to be in three to five years. Most of his employees have been with him for many years, and it's important to discuss career paths early so that we can develop great people internally rather than have to hire from outside. He now hire based on career potential rather than if the person is the best candidate to fill the open position. It sounds obvious, but most people don't do it.
