Overview: This paper applies a configurational approach to analyze the fit between task characteristics, organizational structuring decisions, and performance in inter-organizational relationships. The publisher use 81 dyads observed at the task level in two different studies of supplier-manufacturer relationships in new product development to test a systemic model of fit. In doing so, the authors assess the relationship between: (a) the characteristics of the task on which any dyad interacts within a new product development project, (b) the distribution of problem solving activities between the partners, the timing of their involvement in the project, and their decision making autonomy, and (c) the success of the interaction. The results show a negative correlation between systemic misfit of the relationship and relationship performance.
