Overview: After years of rightsizing, reengineering and a focus on efficiency in factory operations, manufacturing companies are looking for new core competencies that can provide differentiation and competitive advantage. This paper summarizes a framework for exploring these questions and assessing product development maturity. Based on benchmarking studies of the integrated product development capability at 14 successful manufacturing companies, this paper describes the typical maturation patterns followed by these manufacturing companies in enhancing their product development competency. And, it provides observations as to approaches to accelerate the maturation process in other companies interested in learning from the lessons offered by these companies.
