Overview: This paper reviews developments in the empirical analysis of imperfectly competitive markets highlighting issues which still get in the way of analyzing certain questions and/or particular markets. Some of the problematic issues are econometric. The need for a deeper understanding of the properties of estimators based on moment inequalities and for small sample properties probably head this list; and the paper considers moment inequality based estimators in some detail. However, perhaps not surprisingly, the major current stumbling blocks go back to problems which have been a central part of ongoing research programs in economic theory for some time, but for which there do not seem to be generally agreed upon frameworks for analysis.
