Overview: To explore the effects of ubiquitous computing on productivity in knowledge work, the paper first reviews the nature of knowledge work and summarizes how productivity is achieved. Ubiquitous computing appears on the surface to offer very important productivity opportunities in knowledge work processes The concept of affordances is interesting in examining these possibilities. The paper summarizes the possible effects of affordances and related limitations with ubiquitous computing. It suggests how systems and management processes may be designed to minimize productivity losses and achieve overall productivity improvement when ubiquitous computing is implemented.
