Overview: Human survival and well-being largely depend upon the ability to anticipate and cope with future problems and threats. At this stage in the evolution of human affairs such a statement should come as no particular surprise. However, this ability, in turn, depends upon ones capacity to perceive, evaluate and control the effects of the actions, present and future; as well as our ability to imagine and create more desirable futures. All these components are essential for a successful enterprise. This paper analyzes the rationale for studying the future within the context of some new, emerging challenges on the international arena.
