Overview: This paper studies ICT (Information and Communication Technologies)-related spillovers at a macro-economic level and the main issue is whether such externalities can be found at this level of aggregation. In order to study the influence of ICTs on output and productivity growth and to study network effects, a growth accounting approach is used. Firstly a general description of the developments of labour productivity in Europe and the U.S. is presented in the next section. The section after describes the outcomes of the growth accounting exercise, which reveals the direct effect of investments in ICT on productivity growth. The last section studies the network effects and possible spillovers that come from ICT investments and the last section summarizes the paper's main findings.
