Overview: Informal, spontaneous mentoring occurs during the natural course of events, when someone simply reaches out to give support or direction to another person. Sometimes such unplanned mentorships - those that "Just happen" - can help release incipient, unrecognized talents in troubled children and youth. Mentoring does not occur in isolation: "To be most effective, the mentor needs to work not only with the child, but with others in the child's environment as well. Parents, teachers, mentors, and other service providers, such as police, social workers, corrections officers, and medical professionals, are all important agents in helping to develop youth.
