Overview: This paper studies links between firm levels externally validated changes in quality such as certificates, awards, etc. and their impact on productivity. Data Envelopment Analysis approach is used to estimate productivity change for each year during the eleven year period 1993-2003 for a sample of 50 firms in the Indian automobile component industry. The productivity improvement is decomposed into gains due to technical change and improvement in relative efficiency. It was found that there is a positive correlation between quality initiatives and productivity improvement in the Indian auto component industry, but the results suggest the need for further analysis to understand the financial benefits of quality improvement in the Indian auto components industry.
