Overview: International investment is an important and complex phenomenon. Research on international investment to date has focused on a limited number of topics, such as the factors that influence investment decisions and the impact of foreign direct investment in selected developing countries. Until now, other topics have received less attention, notably the universe of International Investment Agreements (IIAs) and their role in relation to development and sustainable development. This paper addresses this relationship. It identifies some of the key developments in relation to IIAs, and articulates a number of issues specifically relating to development and sustainable development that require further attention.
