Overview: Research in strategic management has illustrated the important role played by formal strategic alliances in inter-firm learning. This paper focuses on the role of individual-level inter-firm collaborations by biotechnology researchers and their impact on the patented innovative output of the firm. It is found that after controlling for other factors, the total number of individual collaborations (aggregated at the firm level) positively impacts the patenting output of standalone biotechnology firms. Strategic alliances and individual collaborations appear to be substitutes rather than compliments - firms are most innovative when they rely primarily on one form of collaborative activity. Interviews with biotechnology researches suggest that individual collaborations are often informal and play an important role in enhancing innovativeness at the individual and firm level.
